Australia starts if its World cup campaign in style ..What a way to get to the start.. a 90 odd run victory.. truly inspiring performance. The win made Australia unbeaten in consecutive 30 matches in the world cup. remember the 1999 WC , where in the semifinal it managed a winning tie against south Africa, it never turned back.
The positives in the match against Zimbabwe was that of the continuing form of Shane Watson. He anchored the innings with caution and power batting..!! Hats off to his stable performance.Hope that he will continue his masterly form in the other matches also. very glad to see Michael Clarke performing fine against the spinners. Even though the Zimbabwe spin was not sharp and refined, he played with confidence and energy.
Punter also started off brilliantly but was unlucky that he got out failing to cross the line. but he was also playing confident. the teams which may worry wit spinning options would be India, Lanka and Pakistan. NZ also has vet-tori as its spinning machine. hope that Australia will master all its class against all these teams.
The bowling department was very positive with Brett and Michell bowling sharp and strong. I was not so impressed with Tait's pace even though he managed to scalp wickets. i still recommend playing Dougie Bollinger in some league matches. Dougie has tremendous exposure to Indian pitches. Especially in Chennai Chepok stadium he was blistering with pace, bounce and line.
Still to get into form is White and hussey. Haddin proved too sloppy on changing his strategy. its his natural game that is the power hitting and let him do it naturally in the initial power play overs. that may boost the scoring. Another strategy that i would ask team Australia to follow is bat on till the 35 overs with Watson, had-din, Ponting and Clarke. Even Michell can come up the order if they get out before the 35th over. they cam score around 160-180 between this thatz a 5 run average. thatz a cautious start till the 35 th over. After that we should opt power hitting exactly as that of t20.. white, hussey and steven smith(Ferguson) can do that or even the earlier batsmen who remains not out till then. this definitely power the total to at least 280.. thats the minimum,. if pressurized more 300 + is also possible..
Regarding the bowling we definitely lack a strong spinning option. But the Watson is the real strength of our team in the middle overs. He can move on 7-8 overs easily cheaply and may help get one or two wickets with his experience. hussey and Clarke also can turn their arms to a combined 7-8 overs. Michell and Brett are in good form. unless the pitch supports pace, Tait should not be included, bollinger is a smart options. Also one thing we must make sure is that play all ie Ferguson and bollinger in the league matches and give enough rest for other batsmen. rotation of players is required in the league matches.
Fielding is very smart as far as the first match was concerned, All players looked in good body language and fit. Now that we focus on the second match, you can really try out the strategy that i have mentioned above in this write up. I read about punter's new strategy of using Tait in short spell of 3 or 2 overs. that is an excellent stratz. This could really make Tait fresh when he comes in for the new spell. One thing i repeat is that do give chances for Bollinger in league matches altering Michell, brett and tait...
